Book Summary :)

Summary of the Novel

Red Queen was published on February 10th, 2015 and was written by Victoria Aveyard. The characters in the novel are Mare Barrow, Maven Calore, Tiberias Calore VII, Evangline, Queen Elara, King Tiberias, and Julian. Mare Barrow is a girl who lives in a world were blood defines a person. If one has red blood then the person is a commoner, however if a person has silver then they were the elite with mystical powers. Mare Barrow is just a regular Red girl, her parents struggle to provide food for her and her family everyday so Mare steals for other to provide for herself. Her life is quite normal until her best friend tells her that he is conscripted into the war. Mare was devastated, she could not let her only friend die in the long-term war. Mare comes up with a plan for her and Kilorn, her best friend, to escape from the Silvers and live a normal life together. Mare finds someone to illegally ship them to another part of the country, however the cost to do this is not cheap. Mare comes up with another plan to go to the park that is filled with Silvers and steal from them to afford the fee. However, announce from a terrorist group named The Scarlet Guard causes havoc in the park. Many of the Silvers in the park blamed innocent Reds and killed most of them. Mare was frighten for life so she decides to live the park, however she decides to steal money from Silver. Sadly, she gets caught but to her surprise the young man she stole from let her keep the money and afford her a job when he realized that Mare would be conscripted into the war. A few days later, a carriage takes Mare to the royal castle to start her brand-new job. On the first day of her job, Mare has to assist with a Queenstrial, which is a pageant to show the royal the family that the young girl is strong enough to carry the royal line. Suddenly lightning burst through Mare’s hand, everyone was astonish to see a Red maid possess so much power. The queen had locked up Mare and began to ask her questions, eventually the Queen Elara decided to pretend that Mare is a long-lost Silver Princess and that she would marry her son and continue the royal line. For the rest of her life, Mare is supposed to pretend that she is Mereena Titanos and a silver girl. The queen made Mare study about the history of the country and how to be a proper princess. Mare hated the Silvers so much that she decided to join The Scarlet Guard, to her amazement someone she knew decided to join The Scarlet Guard. Together the plotted ways to bring down the Silvers, all of their plans failed thanks to one person. Eventually someone Mare trusted most had betrayed her and The Scarlet Guard. Eventually the king was murdered by his crazy wife, Cal was framed for his murder and both Mare and Cal were thrown into jail. Maven took power and the first thing he did as King was putting Mare and Cal to trial. Mare and Cal are convicted of treason and will be killed in arena. However, Cal and Mare escape with The Scarlet Guard and they are taking to train. The plot device in this novel is that EVERYONE BETRAYS EVERYONE. Everyone literally betrays everyone, Son betrays Father Brother betrays brother Mother betrays EVERYONE Mare betrays the Silvers. But the plot devices is what keeps the novel interesting. The central idea is power is a dangerous game, anyone is willing to do anything to gain power.  The genre of the book is Fantasy and Young Adult Fiction. The language in the novel is easy to understand, there isn’t many difficult words in the novel. The mood in the novel is quite dark because the book revolves around one purpose, everyone betrays everyone. My favourite part in the novel is when Mare meets Cal, Cal was very sweet to her since the day they met and I believe that Cal will still be that way. I would read this book over and over and over again until the author publishes the second book to the series and then I would read that book over again. I recommend this to anyone who is bored and wants something to entertain them, this book will succeed.

Character Analysis 3: Maven Calore

Maven Calore

“The truth is what I make it. I could set this world on fire and call it rain.” Maven is the second prince of Norta. He is the Cal’s half-brother, and the only child of Queen Elara and King Tiberias VI. At first is a lonely teenager and is constantly overshadowed by his older brother. Throughout the book, you kind of feel bad for him. However by the end of the novel, those emotions evaporate. Maven is actually a treacherous and malicious person who would betray the people who loves simple for a crown. Maven is also a good actor who can fool everyone around him. At first I adored Maven, I thought I could relate to what he was going through but then he did some horrible actions at the end of the book.

Character Analysis 2: Cal

Tiberias Calore (Cal)

Cal is a silver and is the heir to the throne of Norta. Cal possess the power to manipulate fire. He has many characteristics that make him one of my favorite characters in the novel, he is a strong and responsible young man. He would do anything for his country whether it is to turn in a wrongdoer, that he just so happens to love. Cal is a kind-hearted person, Mare had once tried to steal from him. Instead of turning her in, He let her keep the money and gave her more money AND afford her a job in the palace. Cal cares about his brother deeply even though his brother does not know it. Cal overall is one of the best characters in the novel, he is both kind-hearted and responsible person who will one day rule his kingdom well.

Character Analysis 1: Mare Barrow

 MARE BARROWS

"Red in the Head, Silver at heart". Mare Barrow is a Red and is a part of The Scarlet Guard, a terrorist group that plots against the Silver Elite. Mare possess superhuman ability because of a mutation, which is on the reasons why The Scarlet Guard wanted her to join them. Mare is a tough and bitter young women, she goes around her village steals things from people and bring it back to her home. However Mare is compassionate person, she would do anything for the people she loves.
